Function

Catalyzes the cleavage of the pyrrol ring of tryptophan and incorporates both atoms of a molecule of oxygen.
This enzyme catalyzes the first and rate-limiting step in the major pathway of L-tryptophan catabolism in mammals. 
This metabolic pathway is involved not only in a variety of physiological functions but also in many diseases, with special emphasis on the important role in evasion of T-cell-mediated immune rejection
